<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 18px; white-space: nowrap;">Every parent looks forward to their baby's first smile and their baby's first laugh.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 18px; white-space: nowrap;">It is a feeling of real connection beyond the day to day routine of feeding
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 18px; white-space: nowrap;">and changing nappies that is very special. Also laughter, like a smile,
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 18px; white-space: nowrap;">is a communication that everyone in the whole world can understand.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At what age should my baby start to laugh? is a question asked by many parents. You can expect your baby to laugh somewhere between 3 to 6 months but keep in mind, as with all child development, most babies are different. So don't worry if your baby is not laughing at 4 months because everyone is unique and some babies just don't laugh as much as others. Please don't compare your baby to other babies, even other siblings.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A laugh may seem like a simple and spontaneous act but it is quite complex - it even has it's own science called gelotology. Have you noticed that newborn infants have strong grasps?

This is caused by the Grasp Reflex, also called the Palmar grasp. At 2 months of age the grasp reflex should still be present in your baby’s fingers. It is a part of normal early development. Newborn babies are miracles, moving in response to stimulation and inbuilt body reflexes.

A reflex is a movement response - a muscle reacting automatically so this movement is involuntary.

The Grasp Reflex, happens when you place a finger on your baby's open palm. Your baby's finger will slowly curl and close around your finger. Trying to remove your finger can cause the baby's grip to tighten. (as in the photo above) Older children will love it when baby grasps their finger so let them have a turn.

So for the first eight weeks your baby's hands will mostly be in a fist, but soon baby should be starting to open and close their fists all by them self and on purpose. by around six months of age the Grasp Reflex will be disappearing.

Put on some of your own favourite music: it doesn't matter if it is rock, pop, classical, hip hop or jazz.

Hold baby close to you.

Support your baby's head by holding the back of their neck (as shown in photo).

Sway gently to the music.

Dancing gently with your baby is a great way to calm them.
Information from the eyes, ears, balance and the movement work together, in this simple activity, to give baby an awareness of where they are in relation to the space around them.
It also stimulates the balance centre in the inner ear and baby's vision.
By 5 months of age you can sway more vigorously and baby should have good head control and not need to be supported behind the neck.
This is a fun activity that you and baby can enjoy together.

What first foods to feed baby.
I have had 5 babies and always found that they loved sweet vegetables as their first foods. Sweet vegetables like carrot and sweet potato. There is nothing better than making your own baby foods as most commercial foods have been heated so highly to sterilize them, which takes out most of the good nutrients found in fresh fruits and vegetables. This is also why bananas and pears also make a wonderful first fruit, when ripe, as they need no cooking and therefore retain all their vitamins and minerals.
Steaming vegetables is always recommended as the way to retain the most goodness in foods and salt and sugar are not required or recommended. I also introduce small amounts of iron fortified cereal very soon after introducing veges and fruit. Why "iron fortified" is important is interesting - A baby is born with a store of iron that lasts for 6 months and then depletes so it is important that iron is in the food.

Allergy connection.
As a family of allergy people I also found it very helpful to introduce one new food at a time and wait three days before introducing a new food. This way it was easy to see if the food caused a reaction that was a food intolerance or allergy.
I think we as parents get tired of the same food quicker than a baby does and feel the need to give too many combinations and types of foods, so my advice is to go slowly.

When to introduce food to baby.
The Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents, in Australia, is to introduce solids from 6 months of age.

Texture of food for baby.
First offer purees that are easy for baby to digest and then later mashed foods, then minced and finally chopped foods when baby has teeth.

Recommended:
Making your own baby food is not only more economical than buying commercial brands, it also assures that your child consumes only the freshest, top-quality ingredients. Children's nutrition expert Annabel Karmel's collection of best-ever purees grants new parents their wish: one hundred quick and easy recipes that will make for a healthy and happy baby. From first tastes and weaning, right through to meals for older babies, all the recipes are suitable for children aged six months and older. The fruit and vegetable favorites, and innovative fish, meat, and chicken purees, are so tasty you will want to eat them yourself!
As I've mentioned previously, babies do not need lots of toys.

But what if you need to buy a gift for a new born baby or a baby who is having a naming day or christening - what should you buy?

Developmental baby toys for 3-6 month olds would make a great gift for a newborn because this is the age when they would start to appreciate a toy.

Babies at this age are developing their senses so great gifts would be soft, tactile and safe to put in baby's mouth which is where they get the most sensory input at this stage.

The way we care for our babies is how they experience our love. – Magda Gerber

Magda Gerber was an amazing woman who taught how we can have a great relationship and appreciation of our baby and embrace their ability for self-discovery.

Be careful what you teach. It might interfere with what they are learning. - Magda Gerber

In her book 'Dear Parent: Caring for Infants With Respect' you can learn about meeting the needs of the infant AND the parent. You can learn about how to implement these ideas in your home, how to help children feel secure and become competent.

DEAR PARENT
is packed with Magda Gerber's wisdom from a lifetime of observations and writings. It can change forever the way you view infants, toddlers, all other human beings. Communicating with your child, taking his or her unspoken feelings into account from Day One, establishes a relationship based on mutual respect. This book is the perfect gift for a new or expectant parent, especially one who is willing to use common sense in parenting, foregoing all the latest baby gimmicks and contraptions. "DEAR PARENT" will inspire you (as Magda says) to "do less, enjoy more".
Libraries are a free source of wonderful learning materials and now, in Australia and many other countries, they are a way for parents of young children to connect and learn.

You can borrow great baby books, for free, from your local library and there is usually a specific section of board books which are the absolute best for babies.

This means you can have lots of books in your home for your baby to explore and you can change books regularly. If one or two become favourites then you know which ones to purchase or request for birthday gifts.

Did you know that your library stocks CD's specifically for children, such as relaxing Baby Einstein or upbeat Wiggles, audio books, books in other languages and dual-language books?

Libraries also often offer story times and lapsit programs where baby sits on the parent's lap for songs and music and storytime. These sessions are a great way to learn some rhymes you can sing to your baby and meet other parents with babies who live in your area.
Babies seem to love this Peek a boo game, from around 3 months of age, and are happy to play it over and over again.

1.You can play it in four different ways:

<li style="background-image: url("http://cdn.athena.disneyonline.com/athena/assets/1_2_40/images_bz/global/header/chunky_tab_sprites_new.png"); background-position: -8137px -289px; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 14px;">Hide your face behind your fingers, move your hands and say PEEK A BOO! (as in picture)

<div style="background-image: url("http://cdn.athena.disneyonline.com/athena/assets/1_2_40/images_bz/global/header/chunky_tab_sprites_new.png"); background-position: -8137px -289px; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 14px;">

2. Place your hands in front of your baby's eyes, remove them and say
PEEK A BOO!

<div style="background-image: url("http://cdn.athena.disneyonline.com/athena/assets/1_2_40/images_bz/global/header/chunky_tab_sprites_new.png"); background-position: -8137px -289px; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 14px;">

3. When baby is a little older:

PEEK A BOO!

4. By around 8 months of age your baby may want to use their own hands to cover your eyes or their own eyes.

5. PEEK A BOO RHYME

Give your baby the chance to experience calm contentment.

Wisdom, depth, understanding and insight come to children who have learned how to be calm, relaxed, at ease with themselves and able to watch and listen, not just be constantly involved. *

Research says that stimulation is good for baby and that their brain is developing now more than any other time. This does not mean that they need continual stimulation. Too much stimulation can be overwhelming.

Don’t be afraid to give baby some alone time: in their cot with some quiet relaxing sounds or looking at those leaves moving in the trees while you hang out the washing. Maybe they would like to lie on a rug, when you make some calls?

A baby blissfully staring into space does not need to be interrupted. They are listening to sounds, looking at colours and learning the great skill of enjoying one's own company and being centred in that.

Ideally, a parent should leave the room as little as possible.

Babies and young children need the same thing that we do when we feel the need to spend a lazy day around the house to recharge our inner spirit. Your baby is learning so much from their environment, processing so much information as everything is new.

If you have been spending every moment your child is awake stimulating them you need to start slowly giving them 5 minutes "meditation" time a day and increase it slowly over a few weeks.

1. Spend at least ten wildly happy minutes every single day reading aloud.

2. Read at least three stories a day: it may be the same story three times. Children need to hear a thousand stories before they can begin to learn to read.

Learning how to self-settle and go to sleep is a skill babies usually
gain during the first year of life.

I found that taking my babies outside every day helped them sleep better. Fresh air can both soothe and stimulate. When we had a garden we would spend half an hour or more outside in a shady spot both morning and afternoon. If I was busy hanging the washing out or gardening I would place the baby in their pram. Many times they would fall asleep under a tree and I would put a net cover over the pram.

Hammocks, like the one pictured, only work when baby is very young and cannot roll or sit up.

I always went for a walk with the baby in the stroller every day if we were living in an apartment and noticed that on stormy days or days when I did not get outside then sleep time was either less or baby was unsettled.

Establishing sleep rhythms means creating the conditions that help baby to let go and fall to sleep. Being calm ourselves, really helps baby to relax and let go of all the excitement of the day.

So what is helpful?

Baby has had some floor time to stretch and move

Baby has had some fresh air, preferably outdoors

We have been taking our daily environment for granted for years, unlike babies and toddlers who are intrigued by everything they see and hear. Seeing the world through the eyes of a child is an amazing experience of curiosity. Their brain is stimulated by new sights and sounds and their language is developed by us talking to them.
Sometimes I pick up a baby and just walk around the room showing them light switches and door handles, cupboards and pictures, all the while telling them what we are looking at. They never seem to get bored of this as long as I am showing them new wonders.
I am very privileged to see this first hand as the proud grandmother of two beautiful baby boys and working with babies. After having 5 children of my own I am still constantly amazed and awakened when I see this world through their eyes.Lee Goodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05911261310514786271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8951938372286576762.post-9446511891605947772012-04-30T00:48:00.001-07:002013-05-28T13:24:47.408-07:00Finding faces

This is a simple activity that can be done anytime and there is a lot of science backing up the reasons why it is an important daily activity with your baby.

Babies are born with a remarkable ability that helps them identify faces. In experiments, newborn infants have shown preference for looking at faces over other visual stimuli ( Batki et al 2000). They also prefer faces with open eyes and happy faces over frowning ones. (Farroni et al 2007). Eye contact is an important signal in interactions with other people and successful communication depends on the ability to detect the intention to communicate (Frith 2007).
When your baby sees you smile, it releases chemicals in her body. This makes her feel good – and the chemicals also help babies brain grow.
See a diagram explaining the science behind this.

Parents' faces entertains baby and actually make baby feel more secure and safe. (Study at University of Delaware USA)
So this activity is important because it:

creates and nurtures the bond between parent and child

helps baby feel secure and safe

helps baby develop and learn about the world

helps develop communication skills

So make direct eye contact but remember that babies don't always want to look into your eyes: they will look all over your face and tire of doing this quite quickly.
As requested, here are some song and rhyme ideas to do with your baby.

I always find that children love to hear others singing, rather than listening to a CD. So try and remember some rhymes from when you were growing up or learn a few new ones. Don't worry about whether you think you have a good singing voice - your baby will love it.

Singing songs with your child has many benefits but the main ones are connection and fun. Babies love "conversations" where there is give and take. Their response IS with gurgling and babbling.

Reading aloud to your baby is a wonderful way to spend time together. Being read to is the beginning of the literacy and language skills needed for later reading.

It will help children understand that books are important, that you value books and what books are all about.

When should you start reading to your baby?

As early as possible.
From birth they will enjoy being held and listening to your voice so this is a good time to read rhyming books like nursery rhymes or the Mem Fox selections below.
By about 2 months babies may like to look at brightly coloured or contrasting pictures like the Tana Hoban books.
By 4 or 5 months they will be reaching and grasping and enjoying books with different textures like touch and feel books.

What books should I get for baby?
Board books are great for babies up to 2 year olds or even older. They are strong enough not to tear when little fingers reach for them.
Books made of material or plastic are also good.
Any book you enjoy reading is wonderful as it is about baby hearing your voice.
Books with simple, large pictures on a white background.
